Epidemiology

Puducherry is a Union Territory with legislature, extending over an area of 490 Sq. Kms consisting of four geographically isolated census districts of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam on the Eastern and Western coasts of India respectively. Puducherry district which is on the east coast is about 162 kms, south of Chennai and the largest of these and consists of 12 scattered areas interspersed with enclaves of Villupuram and Cuddalore Districts of Tamil Nadu. Karaikal district is about 135 kms. South of Puducherry and surrounded by Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. Mahe district lies almost parallel to Pondicherry, 653 kms. away on the west coast, near Tellicherry in Kerala. Yanam district is located about 840 kms. northeast of Pondicherry, near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. There are 5 Municipalities and 10 Commune Panchayats in the UT of Puducherry.

The Territory of Puducherry was merged with the Indian Union with effect from 01.11.1954 in accordance with the de-facto agreement between the Government of India and the Government of France, signed on 21.10.1954. De-jure transfer took place on 16th August 1962. The Union Territory of Puducherry is administered under the provisions of the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963.
